Welcome, james. This one's a 'minced oath' (a cleaned up version, if you like). The original oath would have been 'by Jesus' -- minced into 'BeJasus', 'BeJazus' etc., though I have to say, 'begeebers'...

There are quite a number of these phrases -- stemming from the Biblical prohibition on used the Lord's name in vain. Some are almost unrecognizable as Biblical oaths or curses -- "jeepers", "gee whiz"...

I think bejeebers is the more common spelling. 29,000 to 1,230 on Google.

"Bejesus" and "bejeezus" are vastly more common still, reflecting the greater frequency of the less finely minced (perhaps only diced?) form of the oath.
